Violence in Kids Shows

Let's clear this up right now I don't want to say that shows that depict war are bad, or should be censored. What I'm really saying is that I don't like it when we have something like tmnt and they are going to "war" with the shredder and there aren't always casualties.
I don't like the idea that kid shows treat it as a big fight where people are slapping each other with wet noodles. Essentially turning fights into a shoving match where punches, kicks, stabs, gun shots are just minuscule injuries that people can just shrug off if you're tough enough. I remember when I was really young (7 years old) and I had a hard time coming to terms with the fact that any of the things describes could hospitalize someone.
Mostly because I didn't have a real frame of reference for what the human body could withstand and how much punishment it could really take. I was young kid who thought that if you slash someone with a sword there is a possibility they would go back flying, or if you chose to not use bats they couldn't induce blunt force truama.
However here's what I don't want to say I'm not against violence in TV, or kids show talking about war. What I want is honesty on what happens when these things happen. I also don't want kids shows to turn into these gore fests that show how brutal these weapons can get because that can desnetize them. What I really want is something basic truths in story telling:
- sword cut or cause bleeding
- gun can kill you or make people bleed
- getting hit by things can hurt a LOT
- that from time to time people don't always get up from injuries
I want kids to enjoy things and the action shows I grew up with as a kid. However when we don't show things honestly bad things can happen for instance the case of LIonel Tate.
In 1999, 12 year old Lionel Tate from Florida was playing with 6 year old Tiffany Eunick when he fatally injured her. Tate claimed he had been imitating professional wrestling moves he had seen on television. In 2001, he was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole, making him the youngest person in U.S. history at the time to receive such a sentence. The case sparked national debate about the influence of violent media on children and raised questions about how society handles juvenile offenders.
What's really sad is a young man spent a long time in jail because he didn't understand what he really did. I'm aware that he commited a robbery later and is now serving a life sentence but I wonder if that's because of the time he spent in jail. I understand that it isn't wrestling job to depict "realism" or to "watch" your kids either. I really don't count wrestling as children's entertainment depsite the fact that MANY children, I know, watch it.
However my biggest gripe and the reason why I'm writing this article is I don't like shows kids shows depicting war. Nobody dies, barely no one is hurt or seriously impacted, and sometimes everyone lives happily ever after. A lot of times it feels like kids shows depict war as one big dodge ball game where if you loose a fight you're just out for a couple of episodes but you'll be back next season.
THe way war is usally handled is like bad things happened in the past to the parents, relatives, or friends. However in the current episodes maybe they'll be some inconviences but nobody will die. Which is the main thing with war that's like the point of a war. And in the process of upping the stakes we sort of glorify war and make war seem cool and not horrifying.
At the end the end of the day I want to watch superman punch bad guys. I want to watch batman jump off of building and take no fall damage. I'm even fine with maybe getting a few scratches from a sword or knife but it can't always be the default. At the end of the day these weapons, fights scuffles need to be treated as such serious engagements that could hurt people.
Depict some blood, maybe someone goes to the hopsital, or maybe someone has to be out for commission. However I don't want it to always be the default. Show kids that sometimes people may perish or seriously get hurt. That combat comes with reprocussions is all that I ask. I know that at the end of the day the reason why war/violence isn't realistic has to do with censorship and parents not wanting kids to see this content.
